Hello! my name is Bayan and I am currently a medical student. Previously, I spent 4 years at the university of Toronto studying Neuroscience.
During this time, I offered extra-curricular classes where I would break down complicated neuroscience topics into simple concepts for my peers. The subjects that my peers and I struggled most with were those relating to biochemistry and organic chemistry, but I realized quickly that the reason these subjects feel so hard is because we are often deceived into thinking that memorizing reactions and processes is enough.
However, the key ingredient that many students miss is active practice. For example, if you learn a biochemical process, the next step is not to only draw it out on papers a few times, but it is to also try and manipulate the process mentally, change some variables, think about how different scenarios may affect that process, and all this should be done out loud.
It is one thing to memorize glycolysis step by step, and a completely different thing to understand every enzyme's contribution to the process, then the regulator's of the process, then to tie that back to basic chemical principles to understand when and why there would be more product vs reactant, etc. etc. And the same applies for most organic chemistry/biochemistry topics.
I hope through this I have managed to bring you into my way of learning and teaching concepts. But most importantly, I've pretty much given you the secret sauce as to what differentiates a normal understanding of a topic from a high level understanding.
